Flexible Engine – Elastic Cloud Server

Introduce new M6 instances for memory optimized use cases

Elastic Cloud Server (ECS) is Flexible Engine’s virtual machine service based on Openstack which offers a wide choice of flavors designed to run your workloads on highly performant instances at the best price.

ECS has received the following updates:

Elastic Cloud Server is updated with a new S6 instance series in Paris region for general-purpose use cases. It provides a balance of computing, memory, and network resources and a baseline level of vCPU performance with the ability to burst above the baseline. These ECSs are suitable for many applications, such as web servers, enterprise development, and small to medium-performance databases.

S6 ECSs use the second-generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors (Cascade Lake Xeon Gold 6278 clocked at 2.6 GHz) and new smart Network Interface Cards at 25 Gbps per port.

This new ECS type is available in 9 different flavors, with a vCPU number/RAM GB ratio ranging from 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4.

Availability

M6 is generally available. It is launched in eu-west-0 region (Paris) and in eu-west-1 region (Amsterdam).

Benefits

M6 series offers an average of 95% better compute price performance over M2 series.

M6 instances has increased performances for the same amount of vCPU and RAM over M2 and M1 instances:

  • on the network, with higher maximum throughput, guaranteed bandwidth and PPS
  • on the computing, with an average 81% higher performances measured with the Phoronix Test Suite from OpenBenchmarking.org

Use Cases

M6 flavors are suited for applications that process large volumes of data and require a large amount of memory, rapid data switching and processing, and low-latency storage resources high requirements on network bandwidth and Packets Per Second (PPS). The targeted use cases are Big data analysis for precision advertising, e-commerce, and IoV, relational databases, NoSQL databases, and memory data analysis.

Limitations

M6 has a maximum number of vCPU of 64 and 512 GiB of RAM.

Console / API and Resources

As all other instance flavors, the new M6 series is available through the console and API.
